AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD……. The 49er Breakfast Rotary Club of Nevada City deserves some special recognition as well. They donated the time and materials to build a ramp for one of our consumers, a consumer on a fixed income who would not have been able to have a ramp otherwise. It is so important for people to be able to get in and out of their houses safely and easily. The Rotary is also helping a FREED consumer with some necessary repairs to her mobile home. The need is so great in our area! People with tight budgets just cannot afford the cost of repairs and modifications that really are only regular maintenance procedures for those with more flexible checkbooks. We thank the Rotary Club for their kind and generous donation.

The Nevada County Contractors' Association has graciously donated some dollars and time and materials to FREED. They have made their newsletter available to us as a vehicle to reach their membership with requests for help. One of the jobs they did for us was as simple as helping a senior get a furnace filter changed, but it made a substantial difference to the person involved. Small things become HUGE when one cannot do them alone. NCCA is also building a wheelchair ramp for one of our consumers. This consumer has been unable to leave her house, unassisted, since moving to her daughter's home in April. She mostly is home alone and will welcome the ability to get out and about and get to know her new friends and neighbors. We hope to be able to coordinate some more projects with this fine, generous organization in the future. It is so great to have the support of such an outstanding group of talented individuals.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
RAMP BUILDING RAMPAGE……. We were so fortunate this summer to have the services of some of the volunteers who build houses for Habitat for Humanity. They did not have houses to work on so they turned their talents and energy over to FREED to build or repair wheelchair ramps for our consumers. They did an incredible job for us. Under the guidance of Tom Whiteside, the Habitat volunteers worked on seven ramps and made the lives of those seven people safer and more autonomous.

GOOD BYE AND HELLO……. Our best wishes and thanks go out to our recently retired volunteers, Ray Millar and Johnny Johnson. We sincerely appreciate the many hours they donated to FREED and to the community. And a special welcome to our new volunteers: Tom Whiteside, Fred Mirch and Roger Thornburn. These folks bring a variety of skills to the Fix-It program and its consumers, and we are delighted to have them working with us. You volunteers make this program possible and this service to the community is invaluable. Thanks for offering your time to this much needed and worthy project. Anyone wishing to volunteer their time and skills to the Fix-It program (basic carpentry/plumbing/home repairs skills required) should contact Melissa at FREED, 530-272-1732 or email: melissa@freed.org.
