DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Branch Manager of the Marysville FREED office and in cooperation with other members of FREEDÕs service team, the Friendly Visitor Coordinator will carry out duties in support of all of FREEDÕs service programs, including the Friendly Visitor Program, provision of advocacy, information and referral, housing, peer support, personal assistant referrals, independent living skills training, and systems advocacy services. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 


á       Become familiar with all aspects of FREED programs to assist consumers in meeting their goals.

 

á       Recruit volunteers to provide peer support and home visitation to consumers participating in the Friendly Visitor Program. 

 

á       Manage Friendly Visitor registry including conducting interviews, background and reference checks, orientation, and training of volunteers for placement on the registry.

 

á       Assist with matching consumers with trained volunteers.

 

á       Provide information, support and training to assist consumers in achieving stated independent living goals and/or make referrals to appropriate resources and agencies.  When necessary, make home visits to consumers.

 

á       Provide advocacy, information and referral services and independent living skills training to consumers.

 

á       Conduct outreach activities to referral agencies, consumer groups, senior organizations, service groups and the media.

 

á       Provide peer support services and information on various peer support groups and activities to consumers.

 

á       Provide information to community service providers, educators, volunteers and interested community members about FREED programs, including assistive technology equipment, programs and services.

 

á       Become involved with at least one community awareness/education and systems advocacy project.

 

á       Maintain accurate records of services requested and provided utilizing FREEDÕs consumer service records policies and procedures.

 

á       Submit all required records and reports in an accurate, legible and timely manner.

 

á       Other related duties as assigned.

 


 

 

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

á            EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High School diploma, or GED, three (3) years experience providing services to people with disabilities and seniors, and one (1) year experience working with volunteers.    

 

á            SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret written materials appropriate for the delivery of consumer services.  Ability to conduct research (including Internet), problem solve and follow trends in services and programs for people with disabilities.  Ability to respond to inquiries from consumers, their families, staff, local organizations as well as the general public.  Ability to write and deliver speeches. Ability to effectively present information to consumers and their families, staff, and public groups.  Ability to prepare written reports, letters and press releases.

 

á            Strong computer skills including Internet.

 

á            COGNITIVE SKILLS

The Friendly Visitor Coordinator is regularly required to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions, recall details and be able to focus on tasks.

 

á            STRESS LEVEL

Moderate. This person is frequently expected to think clearly in emergencies and complete work with deadlines.

 

á            OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understand and convey the concepts of independent living. Ability to exercise initiative, ingenuity and sound judgment in providing consumer services and participating in community education, advocacy or awareness projects.  Ability to work effectively with community resource agencies and/or staff.

 

á            Bilingual in Spanish and English desirable. Knowledge of ASL desirable.

 

á            Ability to become conversant in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

 

á            PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that should be met by the Friendly Visitor Program to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The amount of weight to be lifted is not to exceed fifteen (15) pounds, even for short periods of time.  Reasonable accommodations may be made.

 

á            WORK ENVIRONMENT

                 The noise level of the office working conditions is low to moderate. 

                  Mostly indoors, occasionally outdoors.

                  Moderate amount of travel:  local and regional.

á            VISUAL REQUIREMENTS

Clear vision at twenty (20) inches or less, be able to identify and distinguish colors, and be able to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.  Reasonable accommodations may be made.
